Outreach Pastoral Care Policy
Background Information
The St Thomas’ Primary School Outreach Pastoral Care Policy was formally established in 1995. The programme was set up to meet a need in the school community. Members of the school community, both staff and parents, felt that it was in the spirit of the school’s Christian ethos to provide practical assistance to school families in time of crisis. This assistance might take the form of meals, offering help in transporting children to or from school or other forms. It is important to note that it has always been the custom of the school to help families in need. The establishment of the programme is an acknowledgement and extension of this practice.
POLICY
The St Thomas’ Pastoral Care Policy provides support to families in the school community in times of crisis. The definition of what constitutes a ‘crisis’ is deliberately left loose and is determined by the school Principal as required.
The Policy operates under the direction of the Principal and a small committee of parents. The Principal is generally the first person to know of a crisis in the school community. The Principal passes the relevant information on to the committee who will organise support accordingly. If a committee member becomes aware of a crisis before the Principal, then that member will consult with the Principal to that the policy can be put into action.
The Policy operates respecting strict confidentiality
